The Challenge – To collect a Bronze Reclining Nude from Italy and deliver into the centre of London.
For many years, stg have been engaged in the movement of oversize sculptures, both throughout Europe and elsewhere. One of the early examples was this cast, Bronze Reclining Nude, originating from a foundry just outside Florence, Italy. On first sight, even without the plinth, it was evident that movement overland was impossible, purely on the question of height alone. For this reason, the first challenge was to establish a high load route to the nearest port, in this instance Massa. Avoiding bridges, all overhead cables had to be removed including electricity and telephone.
Once this had been done, and the first stage successfully negotiated, a charter vessel was standing by for the voyage to the UK. On arrival, the repeat process took place, with the sculpture wending its way through the outskirts of London to its final resting place – within the Broadgate complex, near Liverpool Street Station.
Over the years, many other prominent sculptures have been successfully delivered including priceless works by Anish Kapoor and Henry Moore. Destinations range from the Serpentine Gallery to the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao, Spain.
Whatever the subject, shape or size, stg have the experience and knowledge to successfully move both the orthodox and the unorthodox.
