Sculptures come in all shapes and sizes – many sculpture projects are featured elsewhere.
Despite the fact that, in this instance, the origin was Germany – and that the sections were oversize – the first stage of the journey through Belgium and into the UK (under police escort) was relatively straightforward. Where things got really interesting was the last kilometre – into a pedestrian square, dead centre in the City of London.
Not only did roads have to be closed and traffic diverted but also heavy cranes brought into play – lifting each piece from the horizontal into the vertical – before carefully slotting each section into place.
The final stage started at midnight on a Friday evening – the deadline being to have everything completed and off site by 04.30 on the Monday morning – allowing the city to return to normal. With less than twenty minutes to spare, STG made the deadline!
