If you have ever caught a train from Liverpool Street Station, you may have wondered where the Bronze Reclining Nude came from.
There are only two foundries in the world capable of casting something of this size, this one being in Florence, Italy. The only problem, at least on paper, was that it was impossible to move, mainly due to the extreme height – exceeding bridge heights throughout the route.
The solution – to find a “bridgeless” route from the foundry to the nearest, local port – applying the same criteria from the arrival port UK, into central London, no mean task in itself. After numerous route surveys, routes were determined and agreed with the authorities – it was then a question of removing overhead cables, arranging police escorts and chartering a suitable vessel.
