The Maltese Falcon is one of a breed of new “super yachts”, built using the most advanced, modern materials – in this instance, the yacht spars are manufactured from carbon fibre, with an optic fibre insert. The purpose of the optic fibre is to measure the stress on each individual spar, and in turn the mast, under all sailing conditions – with six spars per mast, each measuring 26m across, and a mast height of 58m – the potential stress factor, in high wind conditions, is enormous. Knowing when to have to reduce sail is vital.
By remaining on the same extendable trailer throughout the 2.000 mile transport journey, not only did this ensure that the units arrived “factory fresh” but also avoided the not insignificant cost of specialist packing.
